When You Can't Open Powerpoint Attachments

Recently a client sent me a powerpoint presentation, so that I could use some of the information in a brochure I was designing. I could not open the attachment. I knew I had one of those free viewers for people who don't have the PowerPoint software on their computer. After some research I found the more recent versions of Microsoft Office create files with a different extensions. In the case of powerpoint files it's now '.pptx' instead of '.ppt'. No wonder my older viewer was confused! So before you find yourself in the same situation or if recipients complain they can't open your attachment, here's the solution.

You must download the free file converter/viewer from Microsoft. The simple description for what the converter does is "Open, edit, and save documents, workbooks, and presentations in the file formats new to Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007."

Once you're on the Microsoft page, press the download button near the top. After installing, open the troublesome power point presentation again. Happy viewing.
